About this map

The Dance of the Dragons, the Targaryen civil war of George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood: the Greens of King Aegon II (green) against the Blacks of Queen Rhaenyra (charcoal), 129–131 AC. Dragons fly as dragon tokens, armies march as discs, fleets sail as ships; pins mark battles and deaths. Coloured land shows who held it, bare cloth is neutral; teal is the Ironborn, gold the realm reunited under Aegon III. Follows the book, not House of the Dragon. Fire & Blood gives few exact days (Viserys's death, the Gullet, the Gods Eye, Rhaenyra's death, Sunfyre's death); the other dates are reconstructed from its relative cues ('nine days later', 'a nineteen-day march') and travel times, moons read as months. Places missing from the base map are estimated. Sources: Fire & Blood; A Wiki of Ice and Fire. Map data by cadaei, after Tear, theMountainGoat, Werthead and Other-in-Law; world © George R.R. Events

  • 3 Mar 129, Death of Viserys I: The old king dies in his sleep. Queen Alicent and the green council hide his death for seven days and crown his son Aegon instead of Rhaenyra, his named heir.
  • 10 Mar 129, Aegon II crowned in the Dragonpit: Ser Criston Cole crowns Aegon II in the Dragonpit. Rhaenyra, on Dragonstone, goes into labour at the news and loses her daughter.
  • 24 Mar 129, Rhaenyra crowned on Dragonstone: Daemon crowns Rhaenyra with the Conqueror's crown smuggled out by Ser Steffon Darklyn. The black council sends her sons to win the great houses.
  • 10 Apr 129, Daemon takes Harrenhal: Caraxes lands on Kingspyre Tower and Ser Simon Strong yields the largest castle in Westeros without a fight: the first blow of the war and the rallying point of the black river lords.
  • 15 Apr 129, Lucerys and Arrax killed by Vhagar: Aemond chases his nephew out of Storm's End into a storm; Vhagar, five times Arrax's size, kills dragon and rider. The kinslaying turns a quarrel of heirs into a war of revenge.
  • 1 May 129, Blood and Cheese: Two hirelings sent by Daemon's friends murder Aegon's heir, little Prince Jaehaerys, in the Red Keep, 'a son for a son'. Queen Helaena never recovers.
  • 10 Oct 129, Battle at Rook's Rest: Rhaenys on Meleys attacks Cole's host; Aegon on Sunfyre and Aemond on Vhagar fall on her. Rhaenys and Meleys die, Aegon is burned and broken for a year, Sunfyre is crippled. Aemond becomes Protector of the Realm.
  • 20 Nov 129, The Sowing of the Seeds: Jacaerys offers knighthood to anyone who can mount a riderless dragon. Hugh Hammer (Vermithor), Ulf the White (Silverwing), Addam of Hull (Seasmoke) and Nettles (Sheepstealer) succeed: the blacks now have eight dragons in the air.
  • 5 Jan 130, Battle of the Gullet: Ninety Triarchy warships attack the Velaryon fleet at sunrise. Five black dragons break them, but Vermax crashes into the sea and Jacaerys, the heir, is killed. Spicetown is sacked and High Tide burns.
  • 19 Jan 130, Battle of the Honeywine: Ormund Hightower, trapped between two black armies, is saved when Prince Daeron arrives on Tessarion. The Reach blacks are crushed; Daeron is knighted 'the Daring'.
  • 1 Feb 130, Fall of King's Landing: With Cole, Aemond and Vhagar away at Harrenhal, Rhaenyra on Syrax and Daemon on Caraxes appear over the city while the Velaryon fleet lands an army. The gold cloaks open the gates; the city falls in less than a day and Rhaenyra takes the Iron Throne.
  • 12 Feb 130, Battle by the Lakeshore (the Fishfeed): Roddy the Ruin's Winter Wolves, the Freys and the black river lords trap the Lannister host against the Gods Eye. The bloodiest land battle of the Dance; the westerland army ceases to exist.
  • 2 Mar 130, The Butcher's Ball: Cole's column, marching south past 'corpse feasts', is ambushed at Crossed Elms by river lords and northmen. Cole falls and his men are cut down by the hundreds: the high point of Rhaenyra's fortunes.
  • 27 Mar 130, Maelor torn apart; Bitterbridge burned: Aegon's last son, smuggled out of King's Landing, is found at Bitterbridge and torn to pieces by a mob of Rhaenyra's supporters. Daeron burns the town in revenge.
  • 16 Apr 130, First Battle of Tumbleton: the Two Betrayers: Hugh Hammer and Ulf the White turn their cloaks; Vermithor, Silverwing and Tessarion burn Tumbleton. Ormund Hightower and Roddy the Ruin are killed; the road to King's Landing lies open.
  • 24 Apr 130, Fall of Dragonstone: Aegon II, hidden on the island with the crippled Sunfyre, takes Dragonstone with turncoats from its garrison. Sunfyre kills Baela's Moondancer; Aegon's legs are shattered.
  • 22 May 130, Battle Above the Gods Eye: Daemon waits thirteen days at Harrenhal. On the fourteenth Vhagar comes; locked together, the dragons fall into the lake. Daemon and Aemond both die, and so do Caraxes and Vhagar.
  • 24 May 130, Storming of the Dragonpit: The Shepherd's mob storms the Dragonpit: Dreamfyre, Tyraxes, Shrykos and Morghul are killed and the dome falls. Joffrey, Rhaenyra's last grown son, dies trying to reach it on Syrax, and Syrax dies too.
  • 8 Jun 130, Second Battle of Tumbleton: Addam on Seasmoke and 4,000 rivermen fall on the camp at night. Daeron and Hugh Hammer are killed; Seasmoke, Vermithor and Tessarion die. The green army retreats and the capital is saved from it.
  • 28 Jun 130, Borros Baratheon takes King's Landing: Lord Borros ends the Moon of the Three Kings and holds the city for Aegon II; Corlys Velaryon is freed and joins the king's council.
  • 22 Oct 130, Rhaenyra fed to Sunfyre: Returning to Dragonstone to hatch a new dragon, Rhaenyra is seized and fed to Sunfyre before her son Aegon the Younger. Her cause outlives her.
  • 8 May 131, Battle of the Kingsroad: Borros Baratheon charges the rivermen at dusk; Black Aly's archers and Bloody Ben's flank attack break him, the Duskendale knights change sides, and Kermit Tully kills Borros. The last green army is gone.
  • 14 May 131, Aegon II poisoned: Refusing to yield, Aegon orders his nephew mutilated; he is found dead in his litter with poisoned wine on his lips. The greens' council sues for peace.
  • 10 Jun 131, Aegon III crowned: Rhaenyra's last son, eleven years old, is crowned. Aegon the Dragonbane will never ride one; the dragons are almost extinct.
